Murgon is a town of 2131 people (2006) situated on the Bunya Highway 270 kilometres north-west of Brisbane.
Murgon is located in the South Burnett, the southern part of the Burnett River catchment.
Attractions include winemaking, fishing on the nearby Bjelke-Petersen Damand gem-fossicking.
Murgon is also close to a famous fossil site. The Murgon Fossil Site is the only fossil site with a diverse vertebrate fauna dating to around 55 million years ago, about ten million years after the extinction of the dinosaurs.
Industries include peanuts, dairy farming, beef and cattle production and wine.
